O Sapientia

Today the real countdown to Christmass begins, with the first of the O Antiphons.  These are seven short verses, traditionally sung before and after the Magnificat during Vespers in the last seven days of Advent, based on titles for Christ.

There’s a really neat pattern in them too, but you’ll have to wait to find out what it is.

We begin with O Sapientia – O Wisdom:

O Wisdom,

who came forth from the mouth of the Most High,

and reaches from one end to the other,

ordering all things mightily and sweetly:

Come, and teach us the way of prudence.
