MILLINERIANISM

KNOW YOUR CLERICAL HATS

 1. The Biretta

biretta-1.jpg   fr-paul-and-a-donkey.jpg

Started as Academic dress.  Mediaeval forebear of the modern motarboard.

Worn by priests with any style.

2. The Zucchetto

zucchetto.jpg   desmond-tutu-zucchetto.jpg

So-called because it resembles a pumpkin.  Supposed to keep your tonsure warm.

Worn by priests with any style.

3. The Saturno (Capello Romano or Curé Hat)

saturno-2.jpg  saturno-3.jpg

It looks like the planet Saturn, it’s a Roman hat and it’s worn by Curés.

Made of felt or beaver, take your choice (but we’d advise the felt).

Worn by priests with any style.

Thanks to Fr. Trevor for the second photo; always good to see London Docks encouraging women’s priestly vocations… 🙂

4. Dodgy Mitre

Only worn by bishops totally lacking in substance or style.

5. We’re Not Even Sure What This One Is

One response to “MILLINERIANISM

  1. Fr Raven wears a Cure Hat which has, for me, killed off the idea. The biretta is worn regularly, if only to annoy others in the deanery. No chance of a mitre. No zucchetto, sadly 😦
